About TNEB
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) was established on 1st July 1957 to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity across the state. In 2010, TNEB was restructured into two subsidiaries — TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation), which handles power generation and distribution to consumers, and TANTRANSCO (Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation), which manages the state's power transmission network. Today, domestic electricity bills across Tamil Nadu, including Madurai, are issued and collected by TANGEDCO under its published tariff schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the TNEB electricity bill calculated?+
TANGEDCO uses a telescopic slab system for domestic (Tariff I) connections — each slab of units you consume is billed at that slab's own rate, not your entire consumption at the highest rate. This calculator applies the same slab-wise logic to your entered units.
Why are there two different slab tables?+
The slab structure depends on your total monthly consumption. If you use up to 500 units, the 101–200 and 201–400 ranges are billed separately (with 101–200 also free). If you cross 500 units, those two ranges merge into a single 101–400 slab at ₹4.70/unit, and the rest of your usage follows the higher-consumption slab table.
Is the first 100 units of electricity really free?+
For domestic (Tariff I) connections, the energy charge for the first 100 units in a billing period is nil under the current tariff. This calculator reflects that.
Does this calculator include fixed charges, duty, or taxes?+
No. This tool estimates energy charges only — the slab-wise cost of the units you consumed. Your actual TNEB bill may also include fixed/demand charges, electricity duty, and other statutory charges, so the final amount on your bill can be higher than this estimate.
