Madurai, November 13:
The renovation work at Vandiyur Park — one of Madurai’s most popular recreation spots — is moving forward at a brisk pace. According to Madurai Corporation officials, the upgraded park is expected to be fully open to the public by January 2026.
Currently, only a portion of the park remains open due to delays in construction. The ₹50-crore redevelopment project, announced in the Madurai Municipal Corporation’s 2023–24 budget, aims to transform the park into a lush, eco-friendly leisure destination.
Modern Facilities Planned
As part of the renovation, the park will feature several new attractions including:
- A floating jetty for boating activities
- Food kiosks and refreshment stalls
- A dedicated walking and cycling track
- Seating areas, decorative lighting, and landscaped gardens
Although the project was initially scheduled for completion by January 2025, several works such as plantation, installation of food kiosks, floating decks, benches, and lights are still in progress.
Despite the incomplete infrastructure, visitors continue to access parts of the park, navigating through ongoing work zones and dust.
Once fully reopened, Vandiyur Park is expected to become one of Madurai’s key green urban landmarks, providing residents and tourists a peaceful retreat within the city’s limits.
