Chithirai is Madurai's biggest annual celebration — a ten-day festival, held in the Tamil month of Chithirai (roughly April–May), that combines two great traditions into one citywide event.
Two Stories, One Festival
Chithirai brings together what were once two separate celebrations: the Thirukalyanam, the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, and the journey of Lord Azhagar (a form of Vishnu) from Alagar Kovil into the city to attend it. Together, they make Chithirai one of the few festivals in Tamil Nadu where Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions are celebrated side by side, in the same event.
