நெருப்பில் பிறந்த இளவரசி
பாண்டிய மன்னன் மலயத்வஜன், வாரிசுக்காக ஒரு யாகம் செய்ததுடன் இந்த புராணம் தொடங்குகிறது. புனித தீயிலிருந்து ஒரு மகள் தோன்றினாள் — அசாதாரணமாக மூன்று மார்பகங்களுடன் பிறந்தவள். அவள் தன் விதி நாயகனை சந்திக்கும் தருணத்தில் மூன்றாவது மார்பகம் மறைந்துவிடும் என ஒரு தெய்வீக குரல் முன்னறிவித்தது.
போர்வீர ராணி
பாண்டிய அரியணையின் வாரிசாக வளர்க்கப்பட்ட மீனாட்சி, ஒரு வலிமைமிக்க ஆட்சியாளராகவும் போர்வீரராகவும் வளர்ந்தார். தனது ஆட்சி உரிமையை நிலைநாட்ட மேற்கொண்ட திக்விஜயப் பயணம் இறுதியில் அவரை கைலாய மலைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றது. அங்கு சிவபெருமானை சந்தித்தபோது, முன்னறிவிக்கப்பட்டபடியே மூன்றாவது மார்பகம் மறைந்தது.
தேவர்களின் திருமணம்
சிவபெருமான் சுந்தரேஸ்வரராக மதுரைக்கு வந்து அவரை மணந்தார். இந்த கதையில் மீனாட்சியின் சகோதரராக வழிபடப்படும் திருமால், அவரை முறையாக கன்னிகாதானம் செய்து கொடுத்தார் — இந்த விழாவில் தேவர்கள் அனைவரும் கலந்துகொண்டதாக சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
இந்த திருமணம் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் சித்திரை திருவிழாவின் போது மீண்டும் நடத்தப்படுகிறது — மதுரைக்கு ஆண்டுதோறும் மிகப்பெரிய கூட்டத்தை ஈர்க்கும் நிகழ்வுகளில் ஒன்று.

Every year, Madurai relives its most cherished legend — the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. It's a story told to children long before they ever set foot in the temple, and one that continues to shape the city's calendar and identity.
A Princess Born of Fire
The legend begins with Pandya King Malayadwaja, who performed a yagna seeking an heir. From the sacred fire emerged a daughter — born, unusually, with three breasts. A divine voice foretold that the third would vanish the moment she met the man destined to be her husband.
The Warrior Queen
Raised as heir to the Pandya throne, Meenakshi grew into a formidable ruler and warrior, undertaking a digvijaya — a campaign to assert her sovereignty — that eventually led her to Mount Kailash. There, upon meeting Lord Shiva, her third breast disappeared exactly as prophesied, and she lowered her eyes in realization.
The Wedding of the Gods
Shiva, taking the form of Sundareswarar, travelled to Madurai for their wedding. Lord Vishnu, worshipped in this telling as Meenakshi's brother, came to formally give her away — with the celebration said to be attended by the full pantheon of gods.
This wedding is reenacted every year during the Chithirai festival, one of the events that draws the largest crowds to Madurai annually.
Why the Story Endures
Scholars often note something unusual in how this legend is structured: Meenakshi is worshipped ahead of her consort, and the temple complex itself places her shrine at the centre of daily ritual — a striking departure from more typical Shaivite temple traditions elsewhere. For Madurai, the story isn't just mythology; it's a lens through which the city sees itself, retold each year with the same devotion it has carried for centuries.
