One of Madurai's best-loved landmarks has a new look. The Gandhi Memorial Museum has been renovated at a cost of ₹10.25 crore and reopened with modern visitor facilities, inaugurated by Chief Minister Vijay during his visit to the city.
The Chief Minister paid floral tribute at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, formally opened the renovated museum and walked through the galleries of items associated with Gandhi. A documentary, “Madurai and Gandhi”, was screened for the occasion.

A palace, a collector's bungalow, then a museum
The museum stands on a 13-acre campus with a history far older than the museum itself. The site was originally associated with the summer palace built by Queen Mangammal of the Madurai Nayak dynasty in 1670 — the Tamukkam palace, which gives the surrounding area its name.
Under British rule, the buildings were used as residences for district collectors and judges. In 1955 the Tamil Nadu government handed the property over to the All India Gandhi Memorial Fund, and the museum opened four years later.
