In an age of WhatsApp and instant payments, it's easy to forget how much still travels through the post — parcels from online orders, pension money, savings passbooks, exam hall tickets and the occasional handwritten letter. World Post Day, observed every year on October 9, is a reminder of that quiet network.
This year's theme is “One postal network, infinite possibilities”, reflecting how postal services have grown beyond letters into banking, healthcare access, e-commerce and social communication. The date marks the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Bern, Switzerland, on October 9, 1874. Here are five facts worth knowing.
1. The idea for World Post Day came from India
World Post Day was declared at the Universal Postal Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. The proposal came from the Indian delegate, Anand Mohan Narula, who wanted the world to recognise what postal services contribute to international communication. October 9 was picked to honour the day the UPU was born, and countries have marked it ever since.
2. A 22-country treaty made international mail simple
Before 1874, sending a letter abroad could mean navigating a tangle of separate agreements between countries, each with its own rates and rules. The Treaty of Bern, signed by 22 countries on October 9, 1874, created the Universal Postal Union and a common set of rules for cross-border mail. In 1948 the UPU became a specialised agency of the United Nations, cementing its role in global postal cooperation.
3. More than 6.6 lakh post offices around the world
The global postal network is one of the largest physical service networks on the planet, with more than 660,000 post offices and around 4.6 million employees. It reaches from megacities to remote villages, and today handles far more than letters: money transfers, e-commerce deliveries, health-related logistics and support for communities hit by emergencies and natural disasters.
4. Asia's first postage stamp came from the subcontinent
India's postal story has deep roots. The Scinde Dawk, introduced in 1852 in the Sind region, is widely recognised as the first postage stamp issued in Asia. Under Lord Dalhousie, major reforms in 1854 created a more unified postal system for the country and laid the foundation for the postal service we know today.
| Year | Milestone in India's postal history |
|---|---|
| 1852 | Scinde Dawk — Asia's first postage stamp |
| 1854 | Reforms under Lord Dalhousie create a unified postal system |
| 1972 | Six-digit PIN codes introduced — Madurai's begin with 625 |
| Today | India Post runs the world's largest postal network, with about 1.5 lakh post offices |
Today India Post offers mail and parcel delivery, small-savings schemes, remittances and banking through India Post Payments Bank. In villages across Madurai district and the rest of rural India, the local post office and postman remain a lifeline for pensions, savings and government services.
5. Stamps are small windows into history
The collection and study of postage stamps and postal history is called philately, and collectors are known as philatelists. Stamps capture national leaders, freedom fighters, cultural traditions, wildlife, monuments and landmark events — India regularly issues commemorative stamps to honour achievements and heritage. For a collector, an album is a compact history of a country and its identity.
Want to start collecting? You can open a philatelic deposit account with India Post to receive new commemorative stamps as they are issued. Students can look out for India Post's Deen Dayal SPARSH philately scholarship, and with the “My Stamp” service you can even get personalised stamps featuring your own photo. Ask at your nearest head post office for details.
Why the post still matters
Digital communication has changed how we send messages, but postal networks are more relevant than ever for delivering goods, reaching remote communities and bringing people into the banking system. This year's theme, “One postal network, infinite possibilities”, captures that shift: the same network that once carried letters now carries trade, savings and access to essential services.
This World Post Day, consider thanking your local postman — and perhaps sending a handwritten letter or postcard to someone who would never expect one.
