5 | 30.06°C (NOAA OISST V2.1) |

Thousands of kilometres from Tamil Nadu, the surface of the Pacific Ocean has just set a new record. The sea surface temperature in the Niño 3.4 region — the patch of ocean scientists watch most closely to track El Niño — crossed 30°C for the first time, reaching 30.06°C on October 5, 2026, according to NOAA's OISST V2.1 satellite dataset.
Delta Weatherman, the Tamil Nadu weather forecaster who highlighted the reading, says it is the first time the region has crossed 30°C in daily records going back to 1981. The ongoing Super El Niño, he says, is still intensifying.
What is El Niño, and what makes it “super”?
El Niño is a natural climate pattern in which the central and eastern tropical Pacific becomes unusually warm, shifting rainfall and wind patterns around the world. The Niño 3.4 region, straddling the equator in the central Pacific, is the standard yardstick: how much warmer it is than normal tells forecasters how strong the El Niño is. “Super El Niño” is the informal name for the strongest events, when temperatures there run far above average for months.
The record in numbers
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Niño 3.4 temperature, October 5, 2026 | 30.06°C (NOAA OISST V2.1) |
| Previous daily record | 29.82°C, November 17, 2015 |
| Normal for early October | About 26.6–26.7°C |
| Current anomaly (vs 1991–2020 average) | About +3.41°C |
| Possible anomaly in coming weeks | Towards +4.0°C |
| Expected peak | December 2026 |
| Strong conditions may last until | April 2027 |
According to the report, 2026's readings are running higher than those of earlier major El Niño years, including 1876, 1982, 1997 and 2015 — and the event has not yet reached its usual peak season.
Why it could grow stronger
The report points to several forces pushing more heat eastward across the Pacific:
- Another westerly wind burst, along with twin cyclones over the western Pacific, could drive large volumes of warm water east.
- Trade winds, which normally keep warm water piled up in the west, have weakened.
- Cloud and rain activity (convection) has shifted eastward.
- Kelvin waves beneath the surface continue to carry heat towards the eastern Pacific.
Together, these strengthen the link between the ocean and the atmosphere that sustains El Niño. NOAA has also said El Niño is strengthening, with above-average sea temperatures and supporting atmospheric changes. If the Niño 3.4 anomaly does reach +4.0°C, the report says it would be a level not seen before in the instrumental record.
What it means for Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu gets most of its annual rain not from the southwest monsoon but from the northeast monsoon between October and December. That season has often been normal or wetter in El Niño years. In line with that, Delta Weatherman expects the northeast monsoon to set in over the state in the coming days, with heavy rainfall likely from October 15 to December 20.
The bigger concern is what comes after. With strong El Niño conditions possibly continuing into 2027, he has been urging the public and farmers to store as much of this season's rain as possible, as a buffer for the months ahead.
How Madurai can make the most of this monsoon
- Clean and check rooftop rainwater harvesting structures before the heavy rain arrives, so runoff recharges wells and borewells instead of draining away.
- Farmers and village communities can clear the inlet channels of kanmois (irrigation tanks) and farm ponds so they fill fully.
- Plan crops and sowing with the official seasonal advisories in mind, and keep an eye on the storage in the Vaigai and Periyar dams.
- Store drinking water safely and avoid wasting it even when rain is plentiful.
Heavy rain safety: follow official warnings from the India Meteorological Department and the Tamil Nadu government during the monsoon. Avoid driving or walking through flooded roads and subways, keep away from fallen power lines, and keep a torch, medicines and important documents ready in case of waterlogging.
