தமிழ்நாட்டிலிருந்து இந்த விருதை பெறும் முதல் நகரம் மதுரையாகும்.

In a moment of immense pride for Tamil Nadu, Madurai has been awarded the prestigious 'Best Heritage City Award 2025' by UNESCO at a ceremony held in New Delhi on February 8, 2025. The ancient temple city beat 25 other Indian cities to clinch this coveted recognition for its outstanding efforts in preserving cultural heritage while promoting sustainable urban development.
Madurai scored 92 out of 100 points in the comprehensive evaluation — the highest ever for an Indian city. Madurai is the first city from Tamil Nadu to receive this award.

Why Madurai Won
Madurai impressed the UNESCO evaluation team across all criteria. Exceptional monument conservation included scientific restoration of 2,000 ancient sculptures at Meenakshi Amman Temple using traditional methods, conservation of Thirumalai Nayakar Palace and Koodal Azhagar Temple, and protection of 15+ heritage buildings across the city.
Living cultural heritage programmes — including support for traditional temple arts, preservation of classical music forms such as Harikatha and Villupattu, and documentation of oral histories — also contributed significantly to Madurai's high score.
