Madurai's Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) became the starting point of a new statewide welfare scheme on Monday. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme there on September 28, 2026, under which babies born in government hospitals and Primary Health Centres across Tamil Nadu will receive a one-gram gold ring.
30 babies, and a first ring for Muthu Yazhini
At the launch, the Chief Minister presented gold rings to 30 babies born at GRH. The very first ring went to a baby girl, Muthu Yazhini, from the Azhagumalai area.
The event itself was held in the hospital's auditorium rather than in the mother-and-child ward. Organisers moved it deliberately: a crowd of officials and visitors in the ward could have raised the risk of infection for newborns — a sensible call for a programme meant to celebrate them.

How families will receive the ring
- Babies born from the launch date onwards: eligible newborns will receive the ring at the hospital itself, before the mother and baby are discharged.
- Babies born between June 22 and the launch date: rings will be handed over through designated distribution centres. Families should ask the hospital where the baby was born, or their village health nurse, for the centre and date in their area.
- The scheme was launched in other districts on the same day through designated government hospitals, so the same arrangements apply across the state.
Eligibility hasn't changed from what was announced: the baby must be born in a government hospital or health institution, the mother must be a Tamil Nadu resident, and she must have PICME registration and an RCH ID.
