மதுரை, டிசம்பர் 8: நகருக்கு பெரும் உள்கட்டமைப்பு வலுப்படுத்தல் வழங்கும் வகையில் முதலமைச்சர் மு.க.ஸ்டாலின் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை மேலமாடை சந்திப்பில் புதிதாக கட்டப்பட்ட வேலு நாச்சியார் மேம்பாலத்தை திறந்துவைத்தார். ₹150 கோடி செலவில் கட்டப்பட்ட இத்திட்டம் சிவகங்கை சாலையில் KK நகர்–அண்ணா நகர் வழித்தடத்தில் போக்குவரத்து நெரிசலை கணிசமாக குறைக்கும்.
திட்ட விவரங்கள்
நான்கு வழி அமைப்பில் கட்டி முடிக்கப்பட்ட இந்த மேம்பாலம் 950 மீட்டர் நீளமுள்ளது. ஒவ்வொரு பக்கமும் 7.5 மீட்டர் அகலமுள்ள முக்கிய சாலையும், சேவை சாலைகளும், கீழே வட்டச் சாலையும், இருபுறமும் 1.5 மீட்டர் வடிகால் அமைப்புகளும் உள்ளன.

இந்த திட்டம் சிவகங்கையின் வீர மங்கை வேலு நாச்சியாரின் நினைவாக பெயரிடப்பட்டுள்ளது – ஆங்கிலேய ஆட்சிக்கு எதிரான ஆரம்பகால ஆயுத எழுச்சிகளில் ஒன்றை வழிநடத்திய வீர அரசி.
முதலமைச்சர் காலை 9:50 மணியளவில் நிகழ்விடத்திற்கு வந்து மேம்பாலத்தை திறந்துவைத்து, புதிய அமைப்பில் கொஞ்ச தூரம் நடந்த பின்னர் உலகளாவிய முதலீட்டாளர் கூட்டத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டார்.
அமைச்சர்கள் நேரு, வேலு, சத்தூர் ராமச்சந்திரன், தங்கம் தென்னரசு மற்றும் மூத்த அதிகாரிகள் இந்நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டனர். உள்ளூர் எம்எல்ஏக்கள் தளபதி, வெங்கடேசன் மற்றும் பூமிநாதன் ஆகியோரும் பங்கேற்றனர்.
Madurai, Dec 8: In a major infrastructure boost for the city, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday inaugurated the newly constructed Velunachiyar Flyover at the Melamadai Junction. The project, built at a cost of ₹150 crore, aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion along the KK Nagar–Anna Nagar corridor on the Sivagangai Road.
The Melamadai Junction has long been a traffic bottleneck due to heavy vehicle movement, prompting the Highways Department to initiate the flyover construction. The foundation stone for the project was laid by the Chief Minister on October 30, 2023.
Project Specifications
The flyover, now completed as a four-lane structure, stretches for 950 metres. Each side features a 7.5-metre-wide main road, supplemented by service roads, a roundabout beneath the structure, and 1.5-metre drainage systems on both sides.

Named After Veeramangai Velunachiyar
The project has been named in honour of freedom fighter Veeramangai Velunachiyar, the warrior queen of Sivaganga who led one of the earliest armed revolts against British colonial rule in India.
Inauguration Ceremony
The Chief Minister arrived at the venue around 9:50 a.m., inaugurated the flyover, and walked a short distance on the new structure before proceeding to attend the Global Investors Meet event.
A number of ministers and officials were present at the event, including Ministers Nehru, Velu, Sathur Ramachandran, Thangam Thennarasu, Moorthy, Thiyagarajan, Periyakaruppan, Raju Kanappan, MPs Thangathamizhselvan and Manickam Tagore, District Collector Praveen Kumar, and senior officials from the Highways Department.
Engineers, project contractors — including representatives from Nates India — and local MLAs Thalapathi, Venkatesan, and Bhoominathan also took part in the inauguration ceremony.
Impact on Madurai Traffic
The opening of the Velunachiyar Flyover is expected to streamline traffic movement and offer a smoother commute for thousands of Madurai residents and daily travellers using the KK Nagar and Anna Nagar areas.
