📜 History
Arulmigu Azhagar Kovil, also known as Kallazhagar Temple, is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is situated on the picturesque Alagar Hills about 21 km northeast of Madurai city. The presiding deity Lord Kallazhagar (meaning the 'Thief who steals hearts') is a form of Vishnu worshipped in standing posture with his consort Komalavalli. The temple complex spreads across the forested hillside and includes the main shrine, numerous mandapams, and a large sacred tank. The temple gains special fame during the Chithirai festival when Lord Kallazhagar, as the elder brother of Goddess Meenakshi, descends from Alagar Hills to participate in the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festivities in Madurai. He is traditionally said to stop at the Vaigai River without crossing, in a tradition called Kallazhagar's Vaigai descent. Five Alwars including Thirumangai Alwar, Periyalwar, Thirumalisai Alwar, Nammalwar, and Kulasekara Alwar have sung the Divya Prabandham on this deity. The surrounding Alagar Hills is a protected biodiversity area rich in flora and fauna.

📖 Legend
Lord Vishnu came to Alagar Hills in the form of a handsome youth and fell in love with the place. He is worshipped here as the beautiful thief who steals the hearts of devotees.
During Chithirai Thirukalyanam, Lord Kallazhagar, as the elder brother, set out to bless the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar but stopped at the Vaigai River – a tradition re-enacted annually.
