Arulmigu Sri Ramar Temple in Arapalayam is one of the most important and deeply revered Rama temples in Madurai district, serving the large and growing western residential area of Arapalayam. The temple enshrines Lord Sri Rama in the pattabhisheka (coronation) posture alongside his beloved consort Sita Devi, loyal brother Lakshmana, and his supreme devotee Anjaneya (Hanuman). The Rama temple tradition in Madurai is enriched by the Ramayana cultural heritage that runs deep through Tamil religious life, particularly through the Kamba Ramayanam – the famous Tamil version of the Ramayana composed by the poet Kamban. The temple celebrates all major Vaishnava festivals, with Sri Rama Navami (the birthday of Lord Rama) being the most important annual event. The Rama Navami celebration includes a procession of the divine couple through the streets of Arapalayam on a decorated chariot, with devotional music, bhajans, and the recitation of Valmiki Ramayana and Kamba Ramayanam. Hanuman Jayanthi is another significant event celebrated with special poojas and processions. The Sundara Kandam parayanam (recitation of the fifth chapter of Ramayana) is conducted weekly at this temple, drawing dedicated devotees.
