📜 History

Arulmigu Muthumariamman Temple in Anna Nagar is one of the most active and beloved Mariamman shrines in Madurai, serving the large residential communities of Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, Thiruppalai, and surrounding areas. Goddess Muthumariamman is a form of Mariamman — the Goddess of Rain, Fertility, and Healing — venerated across Tamil Nadu as the supreme protector from diseases, drought, and misfortune. The 'Muthu' prefix means 'pearl' or 'precious', signifying the divine grace that the Goddess showers upon her devotees like precious pearls of blessing. The temple enshrines the Goddess in her characteristic fierce but compassionate form, adorned with neem leaves — the traditional sacred plant of Mariamman — and yellow turmeric paste that symbolises her healing power. The temple neem tree is considered sacred, and its leaves are used in all religious rituals. The Aadi Masam (Aadi month – July/August) is the most important season for this temple, as Mariamman is worshipped throughout the month with daily poojas, abhishekam with neem water, and special fire-walking ceremonies. The annual temple festival Brahmotsavam is an 8-day event celebrated with great community participation, including kavadi, fire-walking, pongal cooking, and cultural events. The temple is known for its healing powers: devotees who have recovered from serious illnesses traditionally fulfil their vow (vinai) by offering neem garlands, doing kavadi, or walking on fire (theemithi) at this temple. The Anna Nagar community deeply reveres this Goddess as their kula deivam (family deity).

📖 Legend

The Goddess is said to have appeared as a bright light in a farmer's neem tree on this spot, directing him to establish her shrine. Since then, the neem tree at the temple is considered the living presence of the Goddess.
