📜 History
Thirupparankundram is the first and foremost of the six sacred abodes (Arupadaiveedu) of Lord Murugan, located about 8 km south of Madurai city on a granite hill. This remarkable cave temple is carved entirely from the living rock of the hill and represents one of the earliest examples of Dravidian rock-cut architecture in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Lord Murugan in the form of Deivasena Pathi, flanked by his two consorts Deivasena (daughter of Indra) and Valli. According to tradition, after vanquishing the demon Soorapadman and his forces, Lord Murugan married Deivasena at this very spot. The cave temple was carved during the Pandya period, with multiple mandapams and structural additions made during the Nayak era. The entrance to the temple features unique rock-cut steps ascending the hillside. The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Ganesha, Shiva-Parvathi, and Durga within the rock complex. Skanda Sashti, celebrated over six days, is the most important festival here, reenacting Murugan's victory over Soorapadman and drawing over five lakh pilgrims. The temple is maintained by the HR&CE Department and provides annadhanam daily.

First Arupadaiveedu of Lord Murugan. Marriage of Lord Murugan with Deivasena believed to have occurred here. One of the most important Murugan pilgrimage centres in the world.
📖 Legend
After defeating Soorapadman and his army, Lord Murugan married Deivasena, daughter of Indra, at Thirupparankundram. The marriage ceremony is re-enacted during the Panguni Uthiram festival each year.
