Arulmigu Sri Naganatha Swamy Temple in Avaniapuram is a significant Shiva temple situated on the banks of the Vaigai River near Madurai. The presiding deity Lord Naganatha Swamy, a manifestation of Shiva associated with serpents (Naga), is worshipped here with his consort Soundara Nayaki. The temple is particularly significant for Naga worship and is visited by devotees seeking blessings for fertility, childbirth, and freedom from serpent-related afflictions. The temple is built in classic Dravidian style with a prominent gopuram. The Avaniapuram area is famous for the traditional Avaniapuram Jallikattu event held during the Pongal festival season, and the temple plays a central role in the religious rituals associated with this event. Aadi Pooram, celebrated in the Tamil month of Aadi, is the major festival here, drawing thousands of devotees from Madurai and surrounding villages. The Pradosham worship held twice a month attracts steady crowds of Shaivite devotees. The temple is a peaceful sanctuary along the Vaigai riverbank.
