📜 History

Arulmigu Vandiyur Shivayoginathar Temple is an ancient and highly revered Shiva temple located in the Vandiyur area of Madurai, best known for its proximity to the Mariamman Teppakulam (the famous Vandiyur Tank). The presiding deity Lord Shivayoginathar is a unique form of Lord Shiva worshipped as the Supreme Yogi — the ascetic who attained the highest state of spiritual realisation through meditation and yogic practice. The deity's name 'Shivayoginathar' literally means 'Shiva who is the Master of Yoga', reflecting the temple's deep association with the Shaivite yogic tradition that has flourished in Madurai for centuries. The consort Goddess Soundara Nayaki Amman is worshipped in a separate sannidhi with full rituals. The temple complex is built in classic Dravidian style with a well-proportioned gopuram and several mandapams. Being located near the historic Mariamman Teppakulam, this temple is visited by many pilgrims who combine both the tank festival darshan and Shivayoginathar darshan in a single pilgrimage. The Maha Shivarathri festival is celebrated with all-night vigil, six-fold pooja, and continuous Shiva Panchakshara mantra recitation, attracting thousands of Shaivite devotees. The Pradosham worship on the 13th lunar day is particularly auspicious at this temple. The temple is maintained by the HR&CE Department and conducts annadhanam on major festival days. Vandiyur area residents consider this as their neighbourhood's principal Shiva temple and organise annual festivals with great community participation. The temple's Nandhi shrine, facing the sanctum, is beautifully carved and is itself a notable piece of Dravidian sculptural art.

📖 Legend

Lord Shiva is said to have performed tapas (deep meditation) at this spot in the form of the Supreme Yogi, blessing the Vandiyur area with peace and prosperity. The nearby sacred tank was said to have appeared as divine grace during his meditation.
