📜 History
Arulmigu Mariamman Teppakulam Temple is situated on an island in the centre of the magnificent Mariamman Teppakulam – one of the largest temple tanks in India, measuring 1,000 feet by 1,000 feet. The tank was constructed in 1645 CE by Thirumalai Nayak by excavating the soil used to build his famous Thirumalai Nayak Palace nearby. According to legend, when the tank was dug, a swayambhu (self-manifest) idol of Lord Ganesha was discovered, and the tank water is believed to have miraculous healing properties. The presiding deity Goddess Mariamman is enshrined on the central island accessible by boat. The tank is famous for the annual Thai Teppa (Float Festival) held in January, when the idols of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar from the main Meenakshi Amman Temple are brought in procession and placed on beautifully decorated floats in the tank for three nights. Thousands of devotees line the banks to witness this illuminated float festival. The tank is also used for swimming and boating by residents and serves as an important water body for the city. The temple and tank are maintained by the HR&CE Department.

One of India's largest temple tanks (1000x1000 ft). Thai Teppa Float Festival is one of Madurai's most celebrated events. Swayambhu Ganesha discovered during tank excavation.
📖 Legend
When Thirumalai Nayak excavated the soil for the tank, a Swayambhu Ganesha idol was discovered. The tank water is said to have flowed miraculously from the Porthamarai Kulam of Meenakshi Temple.
Unlike most goddess shrines in the region, the presiding deity here is depicted seated with the right leg folded over the left — a distinctive iconographic detail devotees point to as a mark of this temple's uniqueness. The shrine is held in such regard that several other Madurai temples send a formal invitation here before beginning their own annual festivals.
