📜 History
Arulmigu Kasi Viswanathar Temple, located on West Masi Street in Madurai city, is a significant Shiva temple built during the Madurai Nayak period. This temple is considered the 'Kasi of the South' and holds the same significance for devotees as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. The presiding deity Lord Kasi Viswanathar (a form of Shiva) is accompanied by his consort Visalakshi. The temple follows Agamic traditions and conducts six-fold poojas daily. It is located along the sacred Masi Street which is the route of the grand Meenakshi Temple chariot festival. Pradosham worship is particularly significant here, attracting large gatherings of Shaivite devotees on the thirteenth day of each lunar fortnight. The temple also houses shrines for Navagraha, Ganesha, and Subramania. The Maha Shivarathri festival is celebrated with great pomp, with all-night vigil and continuous abhishekam performed. Thousands of devotees visit this temple daily, many combining their Meenakshi Temple darshan with a visit here.
