📜 History
Arulmigu Sri Krishnaswamy Temple in Madurai is a cherished Vaishnava shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna worshipped in his most complete form as Krishnaswamy, the Supreme Being who revealed the Bhagavad Gita. The presiding deity Lord Krishnaswamy stands in the classic Tribhanga (three-fold bending) posture with his two principal consorts Rukmini and Satyabhama flanking him. The temple was built during the prosperous Nayak period, traditionally attributed to Thirumalai Nayak, who was a great patron of Vaishnava temples in Madurai. The temple follows Pancharatra Agama traditions for all its rituals and festivals. The Rajagopuram is a fine example of Nayak-era Dravidian architecture. The Janmashtami festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, is the most important annual event, observed with midnight celebrations, Mathura abhishekam, and a colourful display of Gokulashtami rituals that attract thousands of devotees from across Madurai. The Vaikunta Ekadashi festival is another major celebration. The temple has a beautifully maintained tulasi garden (tulasi vanam) considered sacred. Free annadhanam is provided to devotees on festival days. The temple is maintained by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department and is one of the important Vaishnava temples in Madurai complementing the Koodal Azhagar and Azhagar Kovil temples.
