📜 History

The shrine near Maattuthavani is dedicated to Pandi Muniswarar — locally called Pandi Sami — a fierce guardian deity whose legend is tied directly to one of Tamil literature's most famous tragedies. Oral tradition identifies him with the Pandya king Nedunjeliyan, the ruler of the Silappadikaram epic who ordered the execution of the merchant Kovalan on a false charge of theft, only to learn moments later that the charge was false. Unable to bear the weight of the injustice, the king is said to have collapsed and died on his own throne. Shiva, moved that the king owned his fatal mistake rather than deny it, is believed to have granted him a second existence as a guardian spirit charged with protecting the people of the region from harm — atonement transformed into perpetual service. The Maattuthavani shrine, roughly two centuries old and maintained by the local community rather than a large trust, depicts Pandi Muniswarar in the fierce iconography typical of Tamil Nadu's guardian deities: a bold moustache, wide watchful eyes, and thick matted locks bound with chains. A smaller shrine to Samaya Karuppasamy, a companion guardian deity frequently paired with Muniswarar shrines across the region, stands within the same complex.

📖 Legend

Tradition holds that the Pandya king Nedunjeliyan, ruler at the time of the Silappadikaram, ordered the execution of the merchant Kovalan after wrongly believing he had stolen the queen's anklet. On learning the truth moments later, the king was so devastated by his fatal error that he died of grief on his own throne. Shiva is said to have honoured the king's acceptance of his mistake by granting him rebirth as Pandi Muniswarar, a guardian deity who watches over the people of the area he once ruled.
