📜 History
Arulmigu Thiruvaalavai Nathar Temple is one of the celebrated Paadal Petra Sthalams – the Shiva temples glorified in Thevaram hymns by the three principal Nayanmars (Shaivite saints). The presiding deity Lord Thiruvaalavai Nathar, a manifestation of Lord Shiva, is worshipped here along with the Goddess. The name 'Thiruvaalavai' is one of the ancient names of Madurai city, meaning 'the sacred banyan-tree ground.' This Shiva temple is closely associated with the Meenakshi Amman Temple complex and forms an integral part of the Madurai pilgrimage circuit. The temple has been glorified by Thirugnana Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar (Appar), and Sundarar – the three principal Nayanmars – in their respective Thevaram hymns. The temple follows strict Agamic traditions and conducts six-fold daily poojas. During the Maha Shivarathri festival, all-night worship draws thousands of devotees. The Pradosham worship held twice monthly is particularly auspicious and draws large crowds. The temple is among the most ancient religious institutions in Madurai.
