The name Mangayarkarasi means 'Queen among Women', and this temple is associated with the memory of the celebrated Pandya Queen Mangayarkarasi, a devout queen of Madurai who was a great patron of Shaivism and Tamil literature. She was the wife of the Pandya king Nedumaran and is famous in literary history for her role in the Thiruvilaiyaadal Puranam (Divine Games of Shiva). The Goddess here is worshipped as the divine embodiment of noble womanhood, queenly grace, and maternal power, making this temple particularly significant for women who seek the Goddess's blessings for marital happiness, family harmony, and empowerment.
