Arulmigu Dharmaraja Temple in Madurai is a unique temple dedicated to Lord Dharmaraja, also known as Yama, the God of Death, Justice, and Dharma in Hindu mythology. Temples dedicated to Yama (Dharmaraja) are extremely rare in Tamil Nadu, making this one of the few places in South India where the God of Death is worshipped as the presiding deity. Lord Dharmaraja is depicted with his consort and is worshipped for protection from untimely death, legal disputes, justice-seeking, and for the peaceful journey of departed souls. The temple holds special significance during Amavasai (new moon day) when the souls of departed ancestors are believed to be closest to the living. The Karthigai month is particularly sacred for this temple. The temple is also associated with ancestral worship and pitru tarpan ceremonies. Located on the sacred Masi Street in Madurai, this temple is visited by those seeking justice, relief from legal troubles, and blessings for departed family members. It remains one of the rarest examples of Yama worship in Tamil Nadu.
